Have you considered adding a "replaces"-field to the debian control file? I had to manually remove 1.0 since 1.01 conflicts with it, while there are facilities for automatic replacement.
Ideally, set up proper repositories for the linuxes.
Looking forward to play the game (as soon as mesa 8.0 is released).
